Xlab 2013

Experience + Interaction in Public Space

October 24, New York

Xlab is SEGD’s premier digital innovation event connecting design, technology, and communication in the built environment.

At Xlab 2013, we’ll focus on how urban spaces are being shaped by digital communications, immersive experience design, and enabling information retrieval in the built environment. As the digital revolution spreads from mobile applications to new digital/physical environments, we'll explore the impact of emerging visual, sensing, and customization technologies on public space.

The lab itself is a one-day event October 24 at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens. The museum's ultra-modern interiors and expanded space, designed by Brooklyn-based LEESER Architecture, will set the stage for our conversations

Program Thursday, October 24

Session 1

Situational Awareness: Understanding and Evolving the Urban Landscape

Technology has continued to play a role in shaping our social behavior though the way we interact with and cultivate public infrastructure, institutions, and each other. By embracing technology centric strategies, cities have been able to spawn economic development and new models to help shift the way in which we engage one another and redefine the metropolis. Find out from our panelists how we are shaping our cities through research, data visualization, public policy, public engagement, and ultimately our own use of space and interactions with one another.

Session 2

The Coded City: Connecting People and Place

Experience designers are integrating new forms of digital interactivity into their projects. These innovators are experimenting with both low and high tech interventions using programmable sensors, lighting, voice and audio protocols, as well as traditional display technologies. Digital platforms and systems are set to converge and become mainstream, transforming our cities and spaces into next generation experiences that open up the possibility for truly performative and responsive environments. Join us for a diverse sampling of interactive experiences that designers are able to integrate into their projects now and how computation design will be impacting projects in the future.

Session 3

Urban Ephemera and Designing an Experience

Public space provides the opportunity for communities to convene, make, interact, and exchange. Dynamic public art installations provide a platform to inspire and generate meaningful experiences that enhance the connection between people and place. This session will reflect on the process and experiences of key dynamic public installations that emerge from the cityscape and create unique moments.

Session 4

Shifting Practice: Towards a Performative Experience

How do you transform a design practice that has worked primarily within static information and experience design systems into one that creates more immersive, performative, and responsive experiences? This panel session will focus on how the shift toward full experience design has been cultivated, and what has fundamentally changed from the perspective of designing, planning, and executing projects that involve media and experience-driven outcomes.

Session 5

The Future: Defining Next

How will the design of our cities and public spaces continue to respond to our information and data-driven culture? This session will propose provocative questions and opportunities about the role of design and technology in our world.
